ExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentThe day exceeded my expectations and did not disappoint. I enjoyed meeting prospective and current students. It was very well structured. My only recommendation would be that you need to identify specific students who cover the range of courses you have to offer and perhaps formally introduce them ie. Chemistry/ Foundation degree, Chemistry with Modern Languages/ Pharmacology etc - so that both students and parents can speak to them informally.I enjoyed the whole experience particularly the lab experiment ; the interview was relaxed but challenging .YesMale

2017-11-24 17:39:35ApplicantI expected to get a better feel for the university than at the open day, especially with respect to chemistry. I also wanted to get a good idea of what life at the university would be like and, of course, to have a fun/interesting day out. I feel the day delivered on all of these.ExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentGoodExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentExcellentThe only ways I feel the day could have been improved is by allocating more time to the campus tour to allow more parts of campus to be shown and by being able to see a real room in the accommodation rather than a show room.I was particularly impressed by the sample lecture, as this is not something that has been offered by any of the other universities that I have applied to.YesMale

2017-02-24 22:11:19ApplicantA better understanding of what Birmingham has to offer meGoodLess than SatisfactoryGoodNoGoodGoodLess than SatisfactoryGoodGoodSatisfactoryLess than SatisfactoryExcellentGoodGoodIt felt like the experiment was more about having fun than actually chemistry related, not dissimilar to something I'd have expected to advertise gcse chemistry. Whilst the spectroscopy workshop was informative, imaginative and fun, I felt that the teachers explained too much, and did not give prospective students enough time to think for ourselfs. Having said that the day was overall very enjoyable and whilst I though the longer format of the day (compared to other visit days) could have dragged, infact the opposite was true and it was probably the most thorough and enjoyable day I have attended thus farAccomadation was impressive, students were positive, however chemistry facilities were underwhelming compared to other universitiesNoMale

The lecturers and the students who accompanied us on our tour were all so enthusiastic and friendly. They were all a great advert for the university and I would be very happy if my son gets a place here. YesFemale

He was buzzing when we left. The undergraduate students were friendly, informed, interesting and welcoming. Dr Wright, like the undergraduates, was warm, welcoming and is a wonderful ambassador for the department. I know my son was impressed that his interviewer had been matched with his particular interests, which is another example of the level of attention to detail we experienced throughout the day.YesFemale

GoodExcellentSatisfactoryExcellentGoodGoodDid not seeGoodGoodGoodLess than SatisfactoryExcellentGoodI was a little surprised when I heard that I would have to attend Birmingham for an interview, as unlike at other universities it was not made clear when applying. The interview made me feel uncomfortable as I was not asked any questions about me or my personal statement, but just one extremely difficult chemistry question which at the end I was told I wasn't supposed to be able to answer. It was what you would expect if attending an interview at Oxford or Cambrige but not when it has been presented as an informal discussion. Some other people I spoke to had been asked a lot more about themselves and some simpler questions, and so I think that all interviewers need to know exactly what the brief is. It would have been nice to have been shown an actual student bedroom rather than the show flat. The admissions tutor talk was interesting and engaging and everyone I met was friendly and welcoming.
